Enjoy this piece I wrote for TheGuardian.com on the subject of Thanksgiving. Remember to appreciate the small moments long forgotten over the sweeping myths floating around. It’s time to take out the idea of “contribution” and replace it with the idea of “complex contact.” It’s time for us to all appreciate the cultural sacrifices our ancestors made to the national self. We are at the end of the day, part of a larger family, that must understand it’s history in order to persevere.
thought I’d share a poem I wrote after reading and reflecting on this topic, hope you enjoy:
I hear a waver & a turn
Don’t have time to process & stop
Like it, or not, it keeps unfurling
Your words assure themselves of truth & right-of-way
Stories told too many times… how can we begin to revise?
Us, massacred, exterminated, assimilated, educated, Americans
